What are lens implants?

Lens implants are artificial lenses used to replace the natural lens of the eye. A number of conditions such as presbyopia and cataracts may necessitate the removal and replacement of the natural lens of the eye in order to restore or maintain a patient's vision.

Clear Lensectomy

A clear lensectomy is a lens implant procedure we perform at our East Bay area office for clients who are not good candidates for LASIK or PRK due to extreme nearsightedness, extreme farsightedness, or age (40 years old and older). During a clear lensectomy, the natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced by an artificial lens implant. The lens implant used will be determined by a patient's specific needs. You can schedule a consultation for a clear lensectomy and learn more about lens implant surgery if you contact our offices.

Lens Implants After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery involves the removal of a patient's cloudy natural lens. Following the removal of the affected lens, an artificial lens implant is placed in order to restore a patient's vision. You can schedule a consultation for cataract surgery and learn more about lens implant surgery if you contact our East Bay offices in San Leandro and Concord.

Lens Implants to Correct Presbyopia

Presbyopia is an age-related condition in which the lens of the eye loses its flexibility and hence its ability to focus properly. A lens implant can be used to replace the affected lens, allowing a patient to focus properly. If presbyopia is affecting your vision, we can help determine if lens implants or another treatment such as monovision correction is best for correcting your vision.

Lens Implant Options

There are three types of lens implants: Monofocal lens implants, multifocal lens implants, and accommodating lens implants.

Monofocal Lens Implants

Monofocal lens implants allow a patient to focus at one distance (e.g., near distance or far distance). The patient can either have one eye corrected for near vision and the other eye corrected for distance vision or the patient can have both eyes corrected for distance vision and wear prescription reading glasses.

Multifocal Lens Implants

Multifocal lens implants allow patients to focus at all distances (e.g., near, intermediate, and far). A patient is thus able to function without the need for prescription glasses. However, with multifocal lens implants a patient may notice glare or halos while driving at night.

Accommodating Lens Implants

Accommodating lens implants allow patients to experience a continuous range of vision for all distances (e.g. near, intermediate, far, and other distances in between).

Dr. Batra will determine which lens implant is best for you based on your expectations, your lifestyle, and the unique nature of your case. Below is a list of the lens implants we offer at our East Bay offices.

crystalens®

The crystalens® lens implant is a single-focus lens that works naturally with muscles in the eye allowing patients to view images at all distance ranges.

ReSTOR®

The ReSTOR® lens implant uses an adopized diffractive optic design that properly focuses light on the retina allowing patients to view images at all distance ranges.

ReZoom™

The ReZoom™ lens implant uses its patented Balanced View Optics design to create multiple focal points allowing patients to view images at all distance ranges.

Phakic IOLs

Phakic IOLs are prescription lenses used to replace the human lens. We currently offer Phakic IOLs on an extremely limited basis.
